i think i need this

like right now

okay thanks

it’s a holiday photoset-off! every monday from now through december 24 (for you really last-minute shoppers), sarah and i are picking our favorite items from some of the most stylish shops around. “like” the post you like the best! or both! or none? no, both!

week 1: spartan

spartan offers a carefully edited collection of beautiful, practical objects & accessories, influenced by the changing seasons without straying far from our core inventory of reliable, classic items.” stores are in AUS, SFO, and PDX

my picks:

  1. waxed canvas dopp kit by the good flock for someone who has toiletries or other things to put in a handsome bag; $69
  2. crooked maple cutting board for someone who cuts things or needs a place to put things after they’ve been cut; $52
  3. porcelain bowl with stripe by btw ceramics for someone who has things that should be put in a bowl (or someone who has a bowl but not one as pretty as this); $60
  4. sugahara bedside carafe for someone thirsty and sleepy; $75
  5. wooden tool set by jonas damon for areaware for someone with an overly expensive handmade leather tool bag (count me in); $45
  6. recife rollerball pens for someone who has everything in black, white, and grey but who secretly needs a splash of color in his/her life (although they also sell one in grey); $55

and check out sarah’s picks here!

9. iSi soda siphon and seltzer chargers
because a small part of my soul dies every time i open a plastic bottle of soda or tonic water, and i open a lot of soda and tonic water but don’t have much soul left

perhaps surprisingly for someone with a running list of things he “needs”, i don’t like making wish lists for birthdays, christmases, tuesdays, etc. still, i am told i am a pain to shop for, and a list would be helpful. ergo, the first item on my birthday wish list (which, perhaps also surprisingly, is almost as much coffee as it is clothes):
1. baratza encore burr grinder
$129 at sweet maria’s, prima, amazon / $85 refurbished from baratza if available

it continues! this time sarah and i pick from brooklyn’s kaufmann mercantile, which stocks “carefully selected, high-quality products” that they say — and i believe them — “will outlast you.” here are my favorites, and here are sarah’s

the latest in sarah's and my ongoing series of photoset-offs features items from london’s jasper morrison shop. above are my favorites, and here are hers

in the proud tradition of our epic photoset-offs, sarah and I took on the uk’s toast. these are my six favorite items from the store, and here are hers

sarah drew my attention to the reclaimed mahogany coasters on the left, and i made a crack about their being one of my favorites (because I have so many favorite coasters)

for the record, the stainless steel coasters on the right, designed by arne jacobsen in 1970, are my other favorite

sarah challenged me to a brook farm general store photoset-off, and now you get to decide whose photoset is best by hearting this post.

only this post.
